It’s
the last Saturday of summer before the new school year starts. I’m feeling
excited because it’s the last year of high school and I can’t wait to see all
of my friends again especially my best friend whom I’ve missed all through
summer since she and her parents went to America for vacation. I am enjoying
the solitude and quiet of the gentle breeze, reading the latest book from K.A.
Applegate, The One and Only Ivan, sitting under the only cypress tree in this
tangerine grove. I was just getting into the tear inducing part when the
silence was interrupted by the sound of a roaring engine. Tamtam, my brown mare
gave a whiny protest, having woken up. She was tied up on the tree and was
comfortably taking a nap but has now stood on all four legs and was looking at
the direction from where the noise is coming from. I, too, strained to see what
it is when all of a sudden a red motorcycle flew about 10 meters away from us.
It careened off the dirt road and was probably caught on a root because I saw
the rider and the bike separate with a force that made me think of the accident
on the road I saw a year ago when the motorcycle rider was covered in blood and
lifeless. My heart plummeted to the ground when I remembered that accident and
I suddenly prayed to Buddha to not let me experience the horrifying scene
again. I had nightmares for a month after that.
Gathering
my courage, I ran to check if the rider is okay. He was lying on his back with
his right hand holding his head and groaning when I reached him. “You’re
alive!” I said, surprised and thankful at the same time. “Good! That’s good!
Are you okay? Can you hear me? Of course you’re not okay… Oh God! There’s
blood! Omo! Ottokae? What do I do? Breathe Dara… inhale, exhale…” I was panicking. “Don’t move!” I instructed
although the guy lying on the ground has been immobile since I’ve approached
him. The only indicator that he’s still alive is the groans that come from him.
I
have been working as a volunteer at the marine shelter for 4 years now so this
should be easy. I mean, how different can a boy be from a seal right? I knelt
beside him and felt for his pulse. Strong heartbeat? Check. “Can you feel your
legs? Do you have any broken bones or you feel pain?” I asked.
He
removed his right hand from holding his head and let it fall on his side.
That’s when I saw the cut on the side of his forehead. Must be where that blood
is coming from. “You’re bleeding” I said. “I need something to bind your cut.”
The
guy has now opened his eyes and was attempting to stand up. “Don’t move the
patient!” I hold him back down.
“I
am the patient!” he said in a deep voice.
“Well,
don’t move.” I began looking around for something that could make the bleeding
stop when I absent-mindedly ran my sweaty palms on my shorts. That’s when I
noticed my favourite pink crop top, ruined with blood stains. Urgh, just great! I thought to myself. An
idea suddenly came to me and I started to take off my top which made the guy
grin.
“Am
I in heaven?” he asked.
Great, I’m saving a pervert. Thankfully, I’m also wearing a sleeveless
shirt underneath. I decided to ignore him and instead tied my shirt around his
forehead. “There” I pronounced. “Can you get up?”
I
held out my hand but he ignored it and slowly stood up by himself. My, he’s tall. It’s like he’s a head
taller than me. He then started dusting away his clothes and tentatively rolled
his shoulders and stretched his legs. “Thank you” he said. He then noticed his
bike, went to it and began to inspection the damage.
He
let out a curse and kicked the ground.
“Is
it busted?” I asked having walked to where he is.
“I
blew up a tire” he answered, “plus I need to replace the side mirrors.”
“That’s
a good thing then” I said which made him look at me with a scowl, like I was
joking or something. “It could’ve been worse” I defended. “You could have died,
you know…”
“Yeah,
I guess …”
“What
are you doing here anyway? This is private property you know. Didn’t you see
the huge No Trespassing sign? And why were you riding so recklessly, without a
helmet, if I may add. Do you have a death wish or something?”
“You
know, I’m thankful you helped me but that doesn’t mean you can nag me...”
“I
am not nagging” I protested with both of my hands on my hips which made me
remind me of my mother when she’s scolding. I immediately crossed my arms in
front of my chest. “I’m just a concerned citizen. What if you got me or Tamtam
in danger? We weren’t that far when you and your bike decided to invade our
privacy …”
“But
I didn’t” he interrupted. He then picked up his bike and pushed it to lean on
the nearest tangerine tree. He reached for the back pocket of his jeans and
gave a groan.
“Are
you okay?” I immediately followed him, thinking that he’s getting dizzy or
something.
He
showed me his phone and I see that the screen is cracked. “Not my lucky day” he
said.
That’s an understatement, I thought to myself. “Wait here” I instructed
and ran to get my things. I packed up my book, my ipod and half a bottle of
water into my sling bag and untied Tamtamie. “Let’s go, girl” I pulled her and
we walked over to where the guy is, now squatting and inspecting his bike for
more damages.
I
rummaged thru my bag and found my phone. “Here” I offered.
He
mumbled thanks and proceeded to punch some numbers and turned away from me when
he began talking to somebody on the other line.
I
looked at the sorry state of his bike. It seemed brand new to me. I read the
engraved brand name. Ducati. Hmmm,
impressive. I know that it’s an expensive brand. The guy must be a rich
tourist. Too bad it’s ruined now.
After
his call, he gave me back my phone said thanks and turned to go. “Hey, where
are you going?” I called.
“Home”
he answered without looking back.
“What
about your motorcycle?”
“I’ll
pick it up later.”
The
guy is mental, I concluded. He must still be out of it. Is he planning to walk
home, wherever that is or probably try to hitch a ride? Nobody will pick him up
looking the way he is. Come to think of it, he looked quite menacing with his
piercing deep set eyes and brooding looks. I admit he still looked good looking
despite of the dirt and blood on his face … Wait,
Sandara. I think it’s you who’s gone
mental. I chided myself. How can I think along that line of thought? I
mentally shook away the image of the guy. It’s time for me to go home. The sun
will set soon and I still have to prepare dinner for me and my Mom.
I
turned to Tamtam and stroked his neck and muzzle. She was the last gift my
father gave me before he died in a freak accident in the ocean. He and my Mom
both work for Jeju’s Aqua Planet as marine biologists. I was ten when it
happened and my Mom refused to talk about much of what happened in detail and I
don’t press her knowing that it’ll only bring her pain. So, it’s just me and my
Mom now. She’s gone most of the time and I got used to taking care of myself
and do household chores. Usually, I tag along during weekends in the marine
sanctuary where I do volunteer work but given that this is the last weekend
before school starts, I decided to relax and unwind until my R&R was rudely
interrupted.
Thinking
of that guy again, I can no longer see him. He must be on his way out towards
the highway by now. This tangerine grove is quite secluded and far from any
houses so if he can’t catch a ride, it’ll be dark before he gets to the nearest
house.
“Need
a ride?” I asked. I caught up with him as he was walking by the highway, his
thumb sticking up.
He
looked at me and my horse and he shook his head. “No, thanks”
“No
one will give you a ride looking like that, you know. You look like you're a
serial killer or a psycho …”
“Then
why are you helping me?”
“I
figured if you’re a bad person, you’d have done something bad already back
there when we were alone” I explained.
“What
an interesting logic” he quipped.
“C’mon”
I urged. “Or are you afraid to ride a horse?”
“I’m
not afraid of anything” he said. Somehow, I believed his statement.
“Then
why are you so stubborn?”
“Are
you always this …” he gestured, thinking “...this concerned of strangers?”
“I
can’t help it” I shrugged. “I’m the regular good Samaritan” I joked.
He
stopped walking and I motioned for Tamtam to stop using a gentle pressure on my
right foot. “Name is Dara. Park Sandara.
He
took my offered hand. “Choi Seunghyun”
His
hands are so much bigger than mine and very warm. I swear an electric current
ran thru my arm. He really is good looking.
“So
… do I just hop in?” he asked looking at Tamtamie. “Are you sure your horse
won’t mind?”
I
nodded while I stroked my mare’s elegant neck. She usually frets when someone
else rides her but I figured since I’m also riding, she wouldn’t mind so much.
Seunghyun
effortlessly climbed and settled himself at the back from me while I made
soothing noises to Tamtam.
“Are
you sure she won’t throw me off?”
“My
Tamtam is not rude. Right, Tamtamie?” I cooed to which my mare answered with a
nigh.
Once
we’re all settled, I urged Tamtam to move forward. “Where to?” I asked my new
acquaintance.
“Just
until the nearest bus stop”
“Okay.”
We
rode in silence for a few minutes until I couldn’t take the silence anymore. I
often act impulsively and this is one of them. When I offered Seunghyun a ride,
it didn’t occur to me that we will be riding in such close proximity. At first,
he was all stiff behind but the motion of the horse and with him riding
bareback made him almost fall off. The second time it happened, I told him to
hold on to my waist. It wasn’t the first time that I gave a ride to a guy on a
horse but it was the first that I became acutely aware of his masculinity. I
felt myself flush from my embarrassing thoughts. Stop it, I told myself.
“Stop
what?” he asked.
My
eyes went wide with embarrassment. “I guess I’m thinking out loud again” I
admitted.
“What
were you thinking about?”
“You”
I answered before I can put a hand over my mouth. OMG! My mouth has a life of its own!
He
laughed. “So … you’re thinking about me?” he teased. I felt his breath close to
my ear, sending me goosebumps.
“Uh-uhm
… only because it’s not every day that I get to meet a guy on a Ducati with a
death wish” I reasoned.
“You
think I have a death wish?”
“Why
else would you be acting like a daredevil?”
“I
was just trying to explore the place”
“Are
you a tourist?”
“Nope.
New to the island” he answered.
“Your
family moved here?”
“I
have family living here” I can tell from the tone of his voice that it’s not a
subject he wants to pursue.
I
gave a nod. “Do you have money for the bus ride?” I asked after a while.
“You’re
going to give me some if I don’t?”
“I’m
going to lend you some” I stressed
the word lend.
“If
you do, what makes you think I’ll pay you back?”
I
shrugged. “Call it instincts. I believe you’re a good guy.”
“You
are one interesting girl, Sandara Park” he chuckled.
“Please,
just call me Dara.”
We
are now near the bus station and Seunghyun climbed off as soon as we reached
it. “You didn’t answer my question.”
“What?”
“If
you have enough money for bus fare”
He
nodded. “Don’t worry. I do.”
“Good”
I said. “I guess that’s it then. The bus here arrives every 30 minutes so it’ll
arrive soon” glancing at my watch.
He
nodded and reached his hand to caress Tamtam’s mane. “Thank you for giving me a
ride, Tamtamie” he said and gave my mare a gentle kiss.
Tamtam
responded in what I would interpret as happily. Normally, she’s allergic to any
kind of male species.
I
smiled. I was right. He may look rough but he’s a good guy. He removed my shirt
that’s still wrapped around his forehead.
There’s some dried blood on the side
of his face which made him look menacing. “I’m sorry I ruined your shirt” he
said, holding it in front of him.
“That’s
alright. It’s an old shirt anyways” I reached inside my bag and gave him the
water bottle. “You can wash your face a little bit. You have dried blood here”
I reached out to touch his face. He was close enough for me to do it.
Our
eyes locked and we stared at each other for a few seconds, me on my horse looking
down at him and him looking up at me. I retracted my hand as if burned. I
cleared my throat to dispel the sudden awkwardness. “We’ll be leaving then” I
announced.
He
gave a brief smile. “I’ll see you around.”
“See
ya’ when I see ya’” I said as casual as I can.
“Hee-yah!”
I called out as I gave a gentle kick and Tamtam ran fast and away from the bus
station. Somehow, my heart beat is keeping up with the speed of the horse. I
know I have a silly smile on my face. “See you around, Choi Seunghyun!” I
yelled to the wind, knowing he wouldn’t be able to hear me.
